American Girl Grace’s Baking Set Review

American Girl Doll Grace Thomas Baking Set Review

I had to have it.  Because, you guys..  the mixer.

American Girl has apparently found open access to my bank account via my obsession with dolly-size replicas of all the stuff I love, in all the colors I love.

In honor of the 2015 Girl of the Year Paris theme:  Le Sigh.

Dear AG, if you want the rest of my money:  Pyrex.

Where was I?  Oh yes, the Girl of the Year 2015 Grace Thomas and her Baking Set.  Grace is sweet doll, but she’s not coming to live with me and the small friends, unless AG loses their everlovin’ minds again next fall and sells her for $68.

(Was that crazy, or what? That was CRAZY!  In case you missed it, AG sold Isabelle with her accessories and her cat Tutu for $68 for a few very short and frenzied hours in December.)

Even though I’m not getting Grace, I’m certainly not above pilfering her collection.  Grace’s storyline revolves around a trip to Paris and a love of baking, so American Girl has pulled out all the stops to load her down with seriously overpriced and yet irresistibly cute clothing and accessories.  Bistros, bon bons, and berets.. oh my!

I succumbed immediately (defined as: 12:01 a.m. CST on January 1) to the Baking Set.  Thanks to early leaks, I was fully prepared to succumb, with debit card in hand, as the clock struck midnight.

And then I waited patiently, as usual, for the mailman to deliver.

An lo, it came to pass, that the items were delivered, and the human people and the small vinyl people were satisfied.  Mostly.

American Girl Doll Girl of the Year GOTY 2015 Grace Thomas Baking Set Review

American Girl Grace's Baking Set

American Girl Grace's Baking Set

American Girl Grace's Baking Set

The set, as a whole, is undeniably adorable.  Because wee, working stand mixer!  But it’s very, very, very.. plastic.  And most of it isn’t the good, heavy weight, substantial feeling plastic.  It’s the cheap, thin, lots of visible mold markings, clinks-instead-of-clunks-when-you-tap-it plastic.  Again…  Le Sigh.

The mixer is good plastic and the spoon is made of wood, but did I mention the retail price of this set is $68?  It bears repeating at this point that in December, American Girl sold the Isabelle doll, her meet accessories, and her pet cat for the very same price: $68. Obviously that was a moment of corporate insanity, but still!  A decent plastic mixer + a wooden spoon + a lot of cheap plastic stuffs and some additional paper stuffs probably isn’t worth $68 unless you REALLY love the mixer.  Which I do, and which is why I succumbed.

I made a review video if you’d like to see the mixer in action and get a few more details about each of the individual pieces included in the Baking Set.

Overall, I’m not sorry I purchased this set.  I received some gift cards for Christmas and I used a $10 off code so I’m telling myself I really only spent $58 on a plastic-yet-adorable stand mixer, tiny wooden spoon, and accompanying cheap plastic and paper accessories.

If I had to guess, the mixer will be one of those classic, highly sought after American Girl pieces after it retires, and a complete Baking Set with easily misplaced, tiny pieces, like the measuring cups and stylus will be nearly impossible to find.  I wouldn’t want to be the poor soul trying to track the set down for a reasonable price on the secondary market in years to come.

Yet, given the recent history of Girl of the Year megasales, I wouldn’t be shocked to see this set marked down next fall or early 2016.  OR, it might just be popular enough to sell out by December and never go on sale.

What do you think?  Are you buying Girl of the Year merch at full price or waiting for sales? Is any of Grace’s collection a “Must Have” for you, or are you willing to take a chance on mark downs?

  1. Gramma Kathy says:

    Well — since you asked . . .
I’m inspired by Grace in a way that recent “Girls of the year” have not inspired me. (Well, I really loved Isabelle’s sewing machine and cabinet, but otherwise I didn’t relate to her.) But with Grace, I see items that would fit the France-related theme everywhere.

But will I buy Grace or her items from American Girl? Probably not. I live in a very small house and my young granddaughter lives a thousand miles away. Still — I love what you’re doing with it.

    • Steph says:

Seriously.. AG must have predicted the popularity of the French theme because you are right.. it is EVERYWHERE! I’m kicking myself for not picking up some laminated fabric I saw recently. It was pink with black Eiffel towers and would have made the most adorable dolly raincoat. Argh.. I should probably stop torturing myself and go buy it, but it’s 20 minutes away and I’m lazy like that. You’d think I’d learn to just buy this stuff when I see it!

  2. Christian Homeschooler says:

I loved your review! When I saw the baking set at first, I thought it was really cool, because of the stand mixer. But at second glance I realized the mixer is kind of cheap looking and there really isn’t much else in the set worth noting. And for the price, it really should come with some more accessories.
But I really understand why you wanted the set, because I think a stand mixer for the dolls is so cool. 🙂

I would have even been okay with the # of accessories if they had just been higher quality. Wouldn’t it have been neat if the little measuring cups were stainless steel? OR, set “as is” but maybe $48. I feel like they are starting to build future sales into the pricing, which stinks.

  3. Flo says:

Like you, I just had to have this set as well. My obsession with my Kitchen Aid mixer is almost as bad as my obsession with American Girl dolls. It will be interesting to see what happens with this set in the future, I agree that it will probably be one of those things that will be difficult to get. It was the only thing I absolutely had to have out of Grace’s collection, the rest I like, but not in that “OMG, must have!” kind of way. BTW-I was one of those lucky people who got the $68 Isabelle! I want to see Grace in person before I make my final decision, but as of now, I doubt I will get her.

  4. Kayla says:

I love the whole set. My parents could never afford any AG dolls/ stuff me when I was a child now I buy it and make it for myself/ and sell the stuff I make as a big girl way to enjoy it. Also I’m lucky enough to get a discount at AG in the fall from an acquaintance who works the Christmas season and at the end of the year I get all the free goodies they get. Blessed.

    • Steph says:

Kayla, that is a *sweet* perk! And I (obviously) think it’s super awesome to support our hobby with creative endeavors. yay for being a grownup and having ALL THE TOYS! 😀 😀 😀

  5. Linda Ann says:

I was not going to get Grace based on internet AG pictures of her, but we went to the store for fun on Jan. 1 in the late afternoon. It was love at first sight. We bought her and many of her clothes. The baking set is on my list to buy. But we will not be buying the cart or bakery.

    • Steph says:

Sometimes I’m glad we don’t have a store!! I think I’d succumb a lot more often. 😀 I tend to like the stuff I do order even more once it arrives. I don’t think stock photos usually do AG justice! I was disappointed with the cart, I thought I’d add that to my collection since my daughter has the Snack Cart. But based on what I’ve heard from other collectors, I just don’t think it’s worth the current (?) asking price. Maybe if enough agree with me, AG will have to put it on sale next year. I’d buy it for about half the original price.

  6. Chrys says says:

I’m buying the whole set of Grace and holding back to give to my daughter later on down the road as gifts. She is only four and very good with all her dolls and toys. She had to earn Grace.. Grace is about 4 months old and looks new. Can’t wait to see the look on her face when she’s seven opening the bakery. I think Grace items will sky rocket once retired for good. Found table and chair for 65.00 free shipping.

  7. meegan says:

I too got the baking set.Luckily it was during the 12 days of Christmas and was 20% off regular price items. Hubby always buys me the GOTY for Christmas so Grace ( My MILs name as well) came home with me. I was surprised that the accessories were renamed the Welcome Kit.but got a discount on the set.
